Job Description: Bennett Aerospace, Inc. is seeking a highly motivated Additive Manufacturing Technologies Researcher in support of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Maryland. The position will be based at VRC, 22 Forest Road, Webster, MA. This position will specialize in the research and development of materials and materials handling or processing equipment to support the development of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies such as cold spray, metal powder bed fusion and selective laser sintering. Support requirements are twofold: * Develop and use materials processing, handling, and deposition equipment to perform controlled experiments with various advanced material systems including but not limited to advanced metal and ceramic powders. * Develop novel additive manufacturing processes to replace conventional cast, wrought, welded and/or machining methods used to fabricate new parts and/or restore legacy components to include; mold design, fixturing, surface preparation and inspection techniques. The environment of interest includes reactor design, materials processing or handling, development of advanced materials such as Nanomaterials, working with computer-controlled manufacturing processes such as machining or robotics, and computer aided drafting. Requirements also include a basic knowledge of standard materials characterization techniques including metallographic preparation, basic mechanical testing, spectroscopy, and thermal characterization techniques like TGA and DSC. Responsibilities Key Responsibilities and Duties: * Conduct research to develop optimal material processing conditions for powders used in Cold Spray manufacturing processes to enable reproducible results on a variety of substrate materials. * Conduct and transition research involving agile manufacturing innovations to enable insertion and integration of new material systems to enhance effectiveness, durability, reliability, affordability and sustainability and life-cycle management of Army and DoD weapons systems. * Develop materials for processing technologies to optimize weight, performance, and durability, and where possible manufacturing and processing technologies that minimize cost and maximize functionality. * Develop, demonstrate, prototype and evaluate new, improved or novel lightweight materials to enable technologies that can be applied with unique processing strategies. * Research the relationship between materials processing, structure, and performance relationships in metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites using materials synthesis, processing, characterization, and performance measurements. * Draft proposals for improved additive manufacturing processes to address new parts design and/or legacy system component restoration. * Prepare presentations and written documents summarizing efforts in Government format for Form 1 approval (process of instruction provided by COR as GFI). Upon TO COR request, Contractor personnel shall present the information to the ARL staff, universities, private corporations, research institutes, national laboratories, or other Government research centers. Qualifications Education and Experience Requirements: * Minimum of a Bachelor of Arts or Science and ten years of experience or a master’s and five years of experience or a recent graduated Ph.D. in Engineering or Physical Science * Experience as Scientist/Engineer * Knowledge in materials handling, processing, and reactor equipment design * Knowledge and training CAD and computer aided manufacturing * Knowledge of mechanical systems and their design and operation * Knowledge of materials characterization techniques including spectroscopy, TGA, and DSC Expected Travel: * Travel for training as well as customer support as needed, not to exceed 1 week per month. OSHA Medical Monitoring: * The incumbent will not require any specific OSHA testing but may be required to adhere to the PPE requirements of the ARL Center for Cold Spray (Lab 1285), which includes at a minimum, hearing, and OSHA medical monitoring: eye protection. Security Requirements: Clearance Level Required: Secret * Applicants selected will be subject to a Government background investigation and must meet eligibility and suitability requirements. * Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a US Government security clearance. * Successful Pass of Bennett Aerospace Background Investigation, Drug Screening and Credit Check.
