Psychiatrist Position – VA Central Western Massachusetts – Northampton

You are invited to become part of a large mental health team providing care for our veterans. As a staff psychiatrist, you’ll enjoy the personal and professional satisfaction of helping those who have given so much for us. You’ll be part of a team of 8 other psychiatrists and 165 mental health service providers and staff, treating patients with a broad spectrum of mental health needs.

As an inpatient Staff Psychiatrist, you’ll work on two units – an acute and a sub-acute unit. In this environment, you’ll follow your patients as they move from one unit to the other, and you’ll typically manage 8-12 patients at a time, with the average being around 10. The facility treats a wide array of mental illness, including major affective disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders. You will interact with talented and knowledgeable staff from other programs, such as the Specialized Inpatient PTSD Unit (SIPU), the 21-day Substance Use Disorder treatment program, an intensive case management program for those with severe persistent mental illness, and services to support homeless veterans.

Limited and light night/weekend duties make this position attractive, and it comes with a competitive salary and federal benefits package. You should be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident with an unrestricted license (any state) with no history of revocation or suspension and, be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry.

VA Central Western MA has an active affiliation with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, which attracts more than $200 million in research funding annually, with its innovative programs being the centerpiece of the Massachusetts life science initiative.  Possibilities for faculty appointments exist, contingent on review by UMass.  VA CWM also has a research component that consistently offers new opportunities. In addition, we regularly have Resident Physicians from Baystate Medical Center’s Psychiatry Residency Program at our campus for their first year substance use rotation. Baystate and UMASS residents are also eligible to attend for a 4th year elective in PTSD treatment, and other teaching opportunities exist as well.

Western Massachusetts offers the amenities of medium-sized cities such as Springfield and Hartford, the intellectual and cultural opportunities afforded by college towns like Amherst and Northampton, as well as the charm and serenity of numerous traditional New England towns and villages.     Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits; 2) FERS-FRAE basic benefits (pension); and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan

  • How is the pension funded? VA employees hired after January 1, 2014 automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 8.3% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 12.7% of the employee’s salary

  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2016, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $18,000, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $24,000

  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution

  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension

  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel

  • Disability Retirement

  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years’ service
