Community Catalyst, a national advocacy organization, has been giving consumers a voice in health care reform for more than a decade. We provide leadership and support to state and local consumer organizations, policymakers and foundations that are working to guarantee access to high-quality, affordable health care for everyone. Our contributions, which range from policy analysis and strategic assistance to managing national campaigns, enable consumer groups to provide leadership in the hard work of transforming the U.S. health care system. Since 1997, in states and communities across the country, we have been a catalyst for collaboration, innovation, and action in health care reform. 

POSITION SUMMARY

Community Catalyst is seeking a knowledgeable and exceptionally creative leader to serve as the Director of its Center for Consumer Engagement in Health Innovation (the “Center”). The Center, which launched in 2016, is a national leader in championing a consumer and community-driven health system that is just and equitable. We bring the consumer experience to the forefront of health innovation in order to deliver better care, better value and better health for every community, particularly vulnerable and historically underserved populations. The Center invests in state and local advocacy, leadership development, research and evaluation, and consultative services to delivery systems and health plans.

 We seek a Director to lead the development and implementation of a strategic vision for the Center’s next phase of work. The ideal candidate will be mission-driven, entrepreneurial, committed to racial justice and able to serve as a national thought leader on health care delivery and payment reform. The Director will lead a stellar team of dedicated staff with deep knowledge of the current issues in health system transformation particularly for older adults, people with disabilities, low-income populations and communities of color. S/he must excel in a highly collaborative environment, and possess strong strategic skills that identify priorities and integrate resources toward achieving these objectives. In addition, the Director should be experienced in successful fundraising in order to help sustain the Center’s work for the long-term.

SUPERVISION 

The Center Director will report to the Executive Director of Community Catalyst.

RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Develop the strategies and tactics that guide the day-to-day work of the Center.
  • Lead and inspire a team of policy analysts, state advocacy managers, program associates
  • Incubate new ideas and lead fundraising efforts for both specific projects and general support of the Center and serve as a steward of funder relationships
  • Translate knowledge and policy expertise to strengthen state and local advocacy and leadership
  • Serve as a national thought leader with policymakers, health sector players and the media
  • Maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders including other national advocacy organizations, health plans and providers
  • Coordinate closely with other programs at Community Catalyst, leveraging lessons from the Center’s work across the organization
  • Serve as a member of the Community Catalyst Senior Management Team

QUALIFICATIONS  

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree with at least 10 years in a Senior Management role with strong leadership skills
  • Broad knowledge of, and substantive experience in, the health care sector (clinical or non-clinical) and/or in a state-level health policymaking agency (e.g., Medicaid division) 
  • A commitment to the mission, goals, and values of Community Catalyst, including nurturing diversity and inclusion
  • Demonstrable passion for racial justice, undoing institutional racism and ensuring that the work positively impacts Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC)
  • Significant experience managing and leading – including budget management — a major, complex project or a nonprofit organization, a private or corporate business, or a government department or function, comparable in size and scope to the Center
  • A demonstrated record of successful fundraising from one or more of the following entities: foundations, major individual donors, corporations, federal funding sources and the public at large
  • The ability to be nimble in an ever-changing political, policy and funding environment
  • A record of successful public interest advocacy and/or a deep appreciation of the value of advocacy, education and organizing to influence and change public policy
  • Strong team-building skills including the ability and desire to lead a mission-driven staff in a complex, highly collaborative organization
  • Exceptional communications skills in all aspects of programmatic work with media, policymakers, funders, staff, Board and the general public
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and the capacity to develop innovative programs and partnerships.

Preferred

  • A postgraduate or advanced degree (e.g., MD, PhD, MPH, MBA, MPA, MPP, JD)
  • Experience working with state and/or federal policymakers
  • Experience translating evidence-based research and knowledge into public policy strategies and practice
  • Existing relationships with relevant stakeholders and/or coalitions
  • High energy level, good humor and contagious optimism that inspires others with a sense of possibility, progress, and hope.

BENEFITS & SALARY RANGE

  • Salary range: $145,000 – $165,000
